Some of the highlights of my trip to Costa Rica included riding an ATV through the jungle, repelling down a waterfall, white water rafting on the Pacuare River, wandering through Manuel Antonio National Park, discovering wildlife through a nighttime jungle walk, zip lining through the Monteverde cloud forest, marveling at Rio Celeste waterfall in Tenorio National Park, standing at the base of the active Arenal Volcano, relaxing in Arenal's thermal hot springs, and relaxing on the black sand beaches of Cahuita.
Our guided hike through Manuel Antonio National Park was a perfect blend of adventure and education. Surrounded by lush rainforest and pristine beaches, we experienced Costa Rica's beauty up close. Our guide, Diego, had an incredible eye for spotting wildlife that we would have missed, including monkeys, birds, frogs, insects, and unique plants. He made the hike feel like a magical encounter with the environment, using a fancy telescope to give us clear views of the animals he found. With impressive views of the sea and fascinating insights into the local wildlife, the hike was a memorable part of our trip.
Our night time walk through the Monteverde Cloud Forest was both thrilling and fascinating. As darkness settled in, we were a bit wary of what creatures we might encounter. Our guide, Andre, a seasoned birder with 18 years of experience, shared interesting stories along the way. One of the highlights was learning about the Highland Tinamou, a genderless bird that prefers staying on the ground, using its camoflauge for protection. The forest was enchanting at night, with the trees casting eerie shadows and the sounds of nocturnal life stirring around us. Andre's ability to spot wildlife in the dark was remarkable. He had an uncanny sense of where to look, often pointing up into the canopy, where many of the animals were hiding. It was an unforgettable experience that opened my eyes to hidden life in the forest after dark.
Exploring Río Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park was like stepping into a hidden paradise. Known as one of Costa Rica's best kept-secrets, the river's striking sky-blue color is a natural wonder. We were fortunate to visit on a sunny day, as the unique blue hue can disappear after heavy rains. The color is created by aluminosilicate particles suspended in the water, reflecting sunlight in only the blue spectrum. The effect is absolutely breathtaking. We hiked for about four hours along a trail that followed the river, passing by the famous Río Celeste waterfall, where swimming is no longer allowed due to its powerful currents. Along the way, our guide, Mou, pointed out wildlife, including a howler monkey, whose deep call can be heard for miles, despite their plant-based diet. Mou also introduced us to the magical spot called Los Tenidores, where two colorless rivers merge and suddenly turn blue. Local lore says this is where God washed his brushes after painting the sky - a fitting description for such a stunning place.
Our visit to Arenal Volcano was unforgettable, especially since we were lucky enough to get a clear view of the volcano - something rare during rainy season. Standing tall and majestic, Arenal Volcano last erupted in 2010, but its perfect conical shape still dominates the landscape. We stayed in La Fortuna, a town that was once a small farming village but is now a thriving hub for adventure and relaxation. Our resort was adjacent to a horse paddock, giving us a peaceful, country feel while also offering a touch of luxury. One highlight of our stay was the resort's thermal hot springs, naturally heated by the volcano. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters after a day of exploring Arenal Volcano National Park was the perfect way to unwind. Surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature, it felt like a true tropical paradise.
Staying in a beach house on the Caribbean coast at Playa Negra was a unique and relaxing experience. The black sand beach added a dramatic contrast to the lush, green surroundings, and we were treated to the sight of horses playing on the beach - a memory I will never forget. I also saw more wildlife here than anywhere else on the trip, including sloths and toucans in the trees and iguanas roaming around the beach house. Cahuita is a laidback beach village, perfect for slowing down and enjoying nature. One day, we set off on an offshore snorkeling adventure. The boat took us to vibrant coral reefs where we explored an underwater world teeming with life. We saw 35 species of coral and an array of tropical colored fish.
My first time riding ATV's was an unforgettable experience! We set off through local towns, passing families and homes, offering a glimpse into daily life in Costa Rica. After an exciting ride into the mountains, we reached a waterfall where we swam in the crystal-clear pool beneath it. Our guides, who were fantastic throughout the trip, treated us to fresh watermelon while we rested. We even spotted playful squirrel monkeys in the palm trees overhead, adding to the magic of the moment. With the previous night's rain, we were soaked and covered in mud by the end, but couldn't have been happier. The tour ended with the best Tico Casado of my trip - rice, beans, plantains, tortillas, and pork. It was the perfect way to cap off an incredible day of adventure!
Repelling down five different waterfalls in Monteverde was one of the most thrilling experiences of my trip. Our guide, Darnell, taught us how to 'jump' down the line, adding an extra element of excitement to each descent. The tallest waterfall was a breathtaking 130 feet, and it required a good amount of upper body strength to control the line and lower myself in small steps. It was surreal to have the waterfall rushing in front of me while carefully finding my next foothold on the slick rock. The entire experience felt like an adventure out of a movie! After the adrenaline-pumping rappels, the scenery on the hike back was stunning, although the long, steep trek made for a challenging finish to an unforgettable day.
The same day as the waterfall repelling adventure, we geared up for an exhilerating zip-lining experience through the cloud forest. Since we had our eyes set on the superman zipline at the end, we had to carry extra gear in backpacks throughout the course. There were 18 ziplines in total, each varying in length, offering spectacular views as we soared above the treetops. The cool breeze rushing past felt refreshing on the hot day, making each zip even more enjoyable. At the end of the course, I took on the tarzan swing, which was a heart-pounding free fall off a platform before swinging back and forth through the trees. While the zipping was pure fun, the mini uphill hikes between lines were a bit tiring, but well worth it for the adventure!
White water rafting down the Pacuare River, known as the most beautiful river for rafting in Costa Rica, was an unforgettable experience. With Class III/IV rapids, the river winds through lush forests and dramatic gorges, making every turn exciting. Our guide, Albert, with 26 years of experience, expertly steered us through the rapids. He kept us on our toes with four key commands: "backwards, forwards, lean in, and get in," expecting instant responses as we navigated around rocks and through shallow sections. Though sitting on the edge of the raft felt risky, our feet were securely anchored, giving us confidence as we tackled the powerful rapids. Albert, who affectionately called us his ‘team,’ was encouraging and polite, thanking us after every command. Along the way, we stopped for a delicious riverside Tico lunch prepared by Albert, and at several points, he encouraged us to jump into the river to cool off in the calm waters. I even did a backflip off the raft after some playful encouragement!
