ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Windows Loop Trail

The Windows Primitive Loop Trail in Arches National Park is a 1-mile loop that showcases some of the park's most famous arches. Starting at the North Window, you can marvel at the massive arch and take a detour to the right to see Turret Arch. Then the Loop continues on to the South Window, offering a beautiful panoramic view of the formations. The "Spectacles" nickname comes from how the North and South windows together resemble a pair of eyeglasses when viewed from a distance. As you hike toward the North Window, the short side trail to Turret Arch is a must.

Turret Arch's unique castle-like formation stands in contrast to the simple beauty of the North Window. Both arches offer easy access for scrambling right up to their base, allowing you to fully appreciate their scale. South Window, while just as impressive as North Window, is more fragile and dangerous to climb - it is best to admire it from below. The Primitive Loop takes you beyond the arches, offering a quieter experience and different viewpoints of the formations. Along the way, you'll see the "nose" connecting the two windows, adding to the Specticals' optical illusion.

Desert Vegetation & Wildlife

The Windows Loop doesn't just offer incredible rock formations - it also gives a peek at the resilient desert vegetation. As you walk the trail, you'll encounter plants like sagebrush, pinyon, pine, and prickly pear cacti, each adapted to survive the harsh desert climate. Keep an eye out for small wildlife like lizards and birds that thrive in the unique environment.
