Ancient Arab Baths

The Ancient Arab Baths in Palma offer a fascinating glimpse into Mallorca’s Moorish past. Built in the 10th century, these baths were part of a larger Arab structure, serving as a place for both socializing and personal care. The remaining ruins, with their serene ambiance and historical significance, showcase the sophisticated water management and architectural techniques of the Moors. As you step through the arched doorways and wander among the preserved columns, it’s easy to imagine the bustling activity of bathers, relaxing and cleansing in the warm, tranquil waters. The soothing atmosphere of the baths, with their intricate stonework and cool, dimly lit rooms, offers a unique sense of calm and a connection to centuries of history.

One unexpected and delightful part of my visit was discovering the beautiful garden surrounding the baths. I hadn’t known it was there, and stepping into this lush, sun-dappled oasis felt like uncovering a hidden gem. With vibrant greenery, shady palms, and charming stone benches, it was the perfect place to slow down and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. I spent time wandering the pathways, taking in the scent of blooming flowers, and finally settling onto a bench in the sunshine with my book. It was one of those rare, simple moments of pure contentment—just me, history, and the quiet rustling of leaves in the warm Mallorca breeze.

Hamman Al Ándulus

After immersing myself in the history of the Ancient Arab Baths, I wanted to experience a modern take on the tradition, so I booked the immersive experience at Hammam Al Ándalus in Palma. The moment I stepped inside, I was welcomed by a calming atmosphere. One of the attendants greeted me with a warm smile and led me through the beautifully designed space, explaining the different rooms and the recommended order to follow for the best experience.

I started in the warm pool, allowing my body to relax and adjust before moving to the hot pool tucked away in a more intimate corner. The heat was deeply soothing, melting away any lingering tension. Then came the part I was most hesitant about—the cold plunge. I avoided this for the first half hour of my visit, but wanted to truly experience the baths to its full potential. After a deep breath, I went for it - the initial shock was intense, but within moments, I felt completely refreshed. When I moved to the sauna afterward, I realized just how much better it made the experience. The contrast of temperatures allowed me to stay in the sauna longer, fully absorbing the warmth and relaxation.

Between rotations, I spent time in the warm room, sitting on the heated stone bench and slowly sipping hot tea. The room was filled with different aromas, each chosen for their healing properties, making it a sensory experience beyond just the water. As I moved through the cycle of warm, hot, cold, and sauna a couple more times, I felt completely renewed—both physically and mentally. Hammam Al Ándalus was the perfect blend of tradition and indulgence, a place where I could truly disconnect, unwind, and appreciate the centuries-old ritual of water, heat, and relaxation in a setting that felt both timeless and luxurious.
