A Dreamy Evening in the Castle

January 11, 2025

Perched on a hill overlooking Palma, Bellver Castle is one of Mallorca's most iconic landmarks. Its unique circular design sets it apart from traditioinal castles, making it a rare example of Gothic architecture for Europe.

The castle was originally built in the 14th century for King James II of Mallorca, and has served various purposes over the centuries. These purposes range from a royal residence to a military prison!

Today, the castle houses a museum that offers insights into the island's history, along with breathtaking panoramic views of Palma and the surrounding coastline from its rooftop terrace. I was lucky enough to catch a stunning sunset over the mountains during my visit!

Tips for the Perfect Visit:

  • Check the weather: Bellver Castle is an open-air site, so visiting on a clear day will enhance the experience.
  • Be prepared to park at a distance: Unless you arrive early in the day or visit during the winter months, parking near the castle can get very busy.
    • The public bus system (lines 3, 20, & 46) in Mallorca can bring you to the base of the hill leading up to the castle - from there, it is about a 20-minute uphill walk to the entrance.
  • Plan to watch the sunset: Arrive around 4 or 5 p.m. (4 p.m. in the winter months - October-March & 5 p.m. in the summer months - April-September) for enough time to see both the museum and the sunset.
    • Bellver Castle closes at 6 p.m. in the winter months and 7 p.m. in the summer months.
  • Begin with the museum: Explore the museum upon arrival to understand the history before visiting the terrace to enjoy the sunset and views.
