Castell d'Alaró

Nestled in the Tramuntana Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hike to Castell d'Alaró is a journey through one of Mallorca's most stunning landscapes. This historic trail leads to a breathtaking fortress perched high above the island, offering unparalleled views and a true test of endurance. The Tramuntana mountains are known for their dramatic limestone peaks, lush valleys, and picturesque villages, making them a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

Hiking to Castell d'Alaro

This adventure started with a train ride to the Consell/Alaró stop, followed by a bus into the small town of Alaró. From there I began my ascent and from the very start, the hike was breathtaking. The landscape was a perfect blend of rugged mountain terrain and lush greenery, with each step offering a new stunning perspective.

However, as beautiful as it was, this was easily the most challenging hike I have ever done. The path was steep and relentless, testing both my endurance and determination. It was also my first time doing a solo hike, which made the experience even more exciting!

After what felt like an eternity of climbing, I finally reached the top—and all of the struggle was instantly worth it. The views from Castell d'Alaró were absolutely unreal. I had a full 360-degree panorama of the island, with mountains stretching endlessly into the distance, charming little towns scattered below, and even the sea shimmering on the horizon. It was easily one of the most incredible views I have ever seen.

To my surprise, there was a small café at the summit, the perfect spot to recover after such an intense climb. I treated myself to a coffee and spent some time journaling, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Another unexpected but delightful surprise? Two donkeys at the top! Seeing them added a little extra charm to an already unforgettable moment.

As much as I wanted to stay and take in the views forever, I suddenly realized the sun was beginning to set. Not wanting to be caught on the mountain in the dark, I quickly packed up my camera, threw on my backpack, and started making my way down at a much faster pace than I had planned—basically running at some points. The idea of navigating the rocky trails in darkness made me a little nervous, but just as I was picking up speed, a car came around the corner and slowed down. It turned out to be a family I had seen at the summit, and they kindly offered me a ride back down. Feeling comfortable after recognizing them, I gladly accepted. It turned out to be perfect because they were heading to the same town where I live, and they dropped me off just a short walk from home. I couldn’t have been more grateful.

Looking back, this hike was one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my time in Mallorca. The physical challenge, the stunning scenery, the unexpected encounters, and the perfect timing of that ride down all made it a truly unforgettable adventure. If you’re ever in Mallorca and up for a challenge, I highly recommend making the trek to Castell d'Alaró—just maybe start a little earlier than I did!

My Hike Statistics:

Hours: 3 hours and 45 minutes

Distance: 6.58 miles

Elevation Gain: 2,089 feet

Keep in mind, I only made it about halfway down the mountain before catching a ride the rest of the way down so the hours and distance are a bit shorter than it would have normally taken.
